Manual Lymphatic Drainage FAQs
What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)?
ExpandManual Lymphatic Drainage is a very gentle, specialised form of massage that stimulates the lymphatic system – the network that helps your body clear excess fluid, waste products and inflammatory by-products. Using light, rhythmic, wave-like movements, MLD encourages lymph flow towards the lymph nodes, helping to reduce puffiness, support healing and promote a sense of lightness and wellbeing. It’s not a deep tissue massage – it’s all about drainage, not pressure.
Why might I be recommended MLD as part of my body treatment plan?
ExpandAt Cosmetica London, we often use MLD to support and enhance the results of other treatments – especially body contouring (like truSculpt) and certain skin or RF-based procedures. By improving lymphatic flow, MLD can help to:
- Reduce swelling, puffiness and fluid retention
- Support the body’s natural detox and healing processes
- Improve comfort after more intensive procedures
- Refine the overall contour and finish of body sculpting results
- It’s also a wonderful standalone treatment if you feel heavy, bloated or sluggish and want a gentle, restorative reset.
Who is Manual Lymphatic Drainage suitable for?
ExpandMLD is suitable for many people, and can be particularly helpful if you:
- Have had (or are having) truSculpt or other body treatments
- Experience fluid retention, puffiness or a feeling of heaviness
- Want a gentle, non-invasive way to support circulation and recovery
However, MLD may not be appropriate if you have certain medical conditions such as:
- Uncontrolled heart failure or severe cardiovascular issues
- Active infection or fever
- Untreated blood clots (DVT)
- Severe kidney disease
We’ll always review your medical history first to make sure MLD is safe and appropriate for you.
How many sessions of MLD are recommended?
ExpandIt depends on your goals and the context:
-
As part of a structured plan (for example, our truSculpt Body Reset Protocol), MLD is often performed weekly over several weeks to support ongoing drainage and recovery.
-
For general wellbeing or occasional puffiness, some people choose one-off or periodic sessions when needed.
During your consultation at Cosmetica London, we’ll discuss what you’re hoping to achieve and recommend a realistic, tailored schedule rather than a one-size-fits-all course.
What should I expect during and after a Manual Lymphatic Drainage session?
ExpandMLD typically feels soothing and very gentle – more like slow, structured skin-stretching and light pressure than a traditional massage. Many patients find it deeply relaxing and even fall asleep.
After your session, you may feel:
- Lighter and less puffy
- Calm and more relaxed
- Occasionally, an increased need to urinate as your body processes fluid
There’s no downtime – you can return to normal activities straight away. We’ll usually recommend drinking water, avoiding heavy salt & alcohol that day and listening to your body as it continues to rebalance.
